Pyrenópolis (archaic orthography), then Pirenópolis, means “the city of Pirineus”. Its name comes from the hilltop surrounding the city, which is the Serra dos Pirineus. According to the local tradition, the hilltop received this name because Spanish immigrants, probably from Catalonia, were living there. For nostalgia or similarities between them and the Pyrenees from Europe, which is a range of mountains between Spain and France, they gave the name of Pirenéus to this hilltop; however, later, due to the accent of the Brazilian Portuguese language, it started to be written without the diacritical mark.
